Steve was a software engineer from Silicon Valley when he came to Hawaii for the first time. A former bandmate, now a music producer, invited him to recording sessions at a studio named Sea West on the Big Island. Steve says that when he stepped off the plane in Hilo, he had a strong feeling of being ‘home’. The following year he came back to Hawaii for another recording session and a little cottage came onto the market in a magical place named Kapoho Beach. When Steve bought the cottage in 1994 he became a pioneer in using the internet to book vacation rentals. The draw of paradise was so strong that Steve moved to Hawaii in 1996 when his property manager retired and took over the homes she managed.
Steve became a real estate broker and formed a vacation rental company named A Piece of Paradise, named after his cottage. He joined a local Hawaiian band named Bruddah Kuz and his favorite gigs were playing at backyard luaus. Eventually, he sold A Piece of Paradise and moved to Japan to help his wife care for her mother who had become ill.
Three years later he and his wife Iku moved from Japan to Honolulu and started a new vacation rental and real estate sales company. He named the new company Hawaii Second Homes because he wanted guests to feel like they were at home in Hawaii when they stayed at his rentals. And many of his real estate clients purchased a second home to rent until they could move to Hawaii.
The vacation rental market has boomed and many of our guests are staying at a vacation rental for the first time. 2023 marks 30 years since Steve bought that little cottage next to the ocean and he still loves it when guests tell them they had a wonderful time, the best vacation in their lives!
